Remarks: (To) E.W. Smith, Lt. Col & A.A.G. - Sir, I have the honor
to respectfully offer an immediate and
unconditional resignation of my commission as Captain of Company K,
11th West Virginia Vol Infty. Self
respect requires me to do this. Having been honorably connected
with the Regiment for more than two years in
my present grade, and rank, and a vacancy having occurred for the office
of Lt. Colonel and Major, in the
Regiment it was but reasonable that I should expect to fill one of
those offices. But those to whom it belonged
to commission those officers selected them from a grade and rank still
below that of my own, 1st and 2nd
Lieutenants. Therefore it is impossible for me to remain in the
Army under those circumstances and posses any
respect of myself. Urging an attention to this request at the
earliest convenience. - I am, very respectfully your
obedient servant, (signed) James W. Williamson, Capt, 11th Regt WVAVI,
