After the rigors of a forced march during the Lynchburg campaign, Joshua developed a severe cold and fever that settled in his
lungs. He was treated in various hospitals until the close of the war. He was treated first at Point of Rocks, Maryland for 2-3
weeks, Portsmouth, Virginia (from the last week of March 1865 to June 8, 1865), then to Norfolk for a day or two, where he
received his discharge. He was treated by the regimental surgeon, first, a Dr. Edwin D.J. Bond. After the war he was treated by
Dr. E.B. Wright of Ripley, West Virginia. The rigors of all this also brought on rheumatism.

His move to Indiana followed where he was under the care of William R. Gettang at Fort Branch, Indiana. He developed an
enlargement of the left chest causing frequent severe pains and rheumatism attacks. In August 1878, he had another severe
fever. This problem has reduced his capacity for hard labor.

Prior to the war he resided in Jackson County, West Virginia, where he was born and raised. He lived in Ripley, Jackson
County until May 15, 1873, when he moved to Fort Branch, Gibson County, Indiana. He was a farmer prior to the war, and
after the war he has been a day laborer on a farm, in part to his medical condition.

This was filed on April 22, 1881. by Joshua Kessel Dewees and notarized by Silas M. Holcomb.
