on the Shenandoah
Here the 3rd Brigade, Second
Infantry Division and the 1st Brigade, First Infantry Division of the Army
of West Virginia crossed the Shenandoah River below Snickers Ferry, where
the confederates commanded a stronger position. The 1st brigade of the
1st Infantry Division that crossed here at took a position on the extreme
union left flank consisted of the 170th Ohio National Guard (furthest left
position) followed in order by the 123rd Ohio Infantry, 34th Massachusetts
Infantry, and the 5th New York Heavy Artillery (4 companies as Infantry).
The 116th Ohio Infantry formed on the right flank.
On the right of the 5th
NYHA was the elements of the 3rd Brigade, Second Infantry Division beginning
with Frost's 11th West Virginia Infantry followed by the 54th Pennsylvania
Infantry, and the 15th West Virginia Infantry. It was also here the men
recrossed the river in retreat after the battle's end.
