The Lower Island (in Shenandoah River) is pictured here from the old farmer's lane. The giant sycamores stood then (though not as tall, obviously), and some show deformities from gunshot and shell. This was the position the 2nd brigade, 1st Infantry division (union) crossed then retreated. Many men drowned in the strong current that swept them to Parkers Hole further down the river.
