How to decide if you should enter as an individual or as a relay team in the Texas High School Triathalon Chamionships

Remember that although this is called a high school championship, the intent is to introduce you to a sport that is fun and challenging.  This sport is within the grasp of most of your abilities.

1.  Can you swim the 500 meters without hanging on the wall? The swim will be in s small, shallow, man-made lake.  It is a point to point swim, therefore no flipturns or wall hanging.  There will be buoys and monitors in boats if anyone develops a cramp, or you can swim to the side of the lake.  However, if you are not a strong enough swimmer to swim 500 meters without endangering your life, you should look on the list for a swimmer for a relay team.
2. Most athletes should have no trouble with the bike portion of the race which is 12 miles.  The bike course will be monitored and traffic will be controlled.  Nonetheless, any biker must be alert for traffic hazards.  Remember you must always wear a helmet while on the bike.  Road bikes are faster than mountain bikes, but there will be plenty of participants on mountain bikes.  The main consideration for your bike is that is in good working condition-check the breaks, gears, and tires.  Carry a water bottle.
3.  If you have difficulty running three miles, no problema, you don't get DQ'd for walking, and beleive me  you won't be the only one! If the run is the only thing stopping you from entering as an individual, my advice is to go for it!  You might surprise yourself.

WHAT THE STYLISH TRIATHLETE WEARS

For individuals who are confident enough:  Your Speedo the whole race.

Otherwise you may slip shorts and a T-shirt on over your suit for the bike and the run.  T-shirts catch the wind on a bike and will slow you down so you may just want to wear them on the run.  You will need to wear a number on the run- you can just pin the number to a shirt ahead of time or you can put it on a racing belt which you wear around your waist.  Don't forget running shoes and bike shoes if you have clipless pedals.  You will lay your clothing, shoes, bike and helmet on a towel in the transition area by your bike.

Relay teams: Wear whatever is appropriate and comfortable for your leg of the race.  Runners must have their race number on their front.  Bikers must have helmets.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

____Decide whether you will enter as an individual (do all three legs of the race) or a relay (each person does one leg of the relay)
____If you are going to do a relay, find two other people you can count on to fill out your relay and give yourselves a snappy name like "The Triminators" or "The Three Amigos" (okay i know those names are lame but you get the idea.)  I have attached a list of possible teammates.  CLICK HERE.
____Fill out the entry form (CLICK HERE) Each person must fill out an entry form.
