The
pictures above are an example of what happened to coil springs on a 2000 Ford
Taurus Wagon. The right spring fractured when the owner shifted into drive. Two
months later the same thing happened to the left spring while shifting in
reverse. Fortunately the car was parked in his driveway when both failures
occurred.
The
NHTSA has received 29 complaints on the 1999 model year cars and 8 on the year
2000.
See
records below. Ford Motor Company has not issued any recalls on the problem
since according to NHTSA no fatalities have resulted from the failures and the
failure rate has been below a certain percentage threshold.
For those of us who own and drive Ford cars it is of utmost concern. It is an accident ready to happen every time we drive our cars.
The
following statement was posted on Lemon Aide Car Guide web page http://www.lemonaidcars.com/ford.htm under the heading of Secret
Warranties/Service Tips
"Free replacement through the year 2001 of front coil springs that
fracture or may fracture due to excessive corrosion”
The
following fix of the problem is posted
on http://www.apa.ca/template.asp?DocID=23 “Recall
covering 1993 models: front coil springs may fracture as a result of corrosion
and cause tire deflation. Install spring catcher bracket to prevent a fractured
spring from contacting a tire”. Some recommend installing a guard/shield.
