Mary
Helen Herman of Jackson, MI, sent me a letter and Family Charts that showed her
descent from Capt. Jabez. I input the information from Moses down to her in
FTM, and printed out a Research Report. I did not include Jabez, or Helen’s
children and grandchildren, to protect their privacy. Following are her letter
and the Research Report. I corrected
some miner errors: Ware is in Hampshire County MA, and Hope was in Montgomery
County, NY when Gideon was there.

Dear Mr. Hommel,
Here is my line to Capt. Jabez
Olmsted. I checked in History of Ware, Ma; Brookfield, Ma V.R.; V.R. of Ware,
Ma & some of Hardwick, Ma. Also History of the Town of Pittsford, Vt but
don't have the author. In the History of Pittsford, Vt, it tells that Moses
Olmsted helped in rebuilding Pittsford, Vt after the Rev. war.
In Arthur Chase "History
of Ware, Ma” it gives Moses Olmsted (Muster Roll dated 1756) who had served
within two years in Capt. Ingersoll's Co. He was also in the Canada Expedition
from Mar 30 to Nov 30 from Ware River. When I was in Pittsford, Vt, I copied
grantees and grantors of Moses to about 1783‑85. There was no mention of
his wife.
I wrote to a Judge Areal L.
Crowley of Utah and he said he had a will of Moses at LDS Library and I could
send and get a copy, which I did. It was hard to read but was able to make out
the children. I have a lot of questions on the information that Judge Crowley
has.
In the Will it sounds like
Jonas & Benjamin were under age. But I figure that Jonas was 24 years old
and Benjamin was 14. Also in the will is the first I had heard of another wife.
I would like to know when Moses’s wife, ABIGAIL (ELWELL) OLMSTED died and
where? In the Cemetery Book of Branch County, Mich. it give Moses's youngest
son, Benjamin Olmsted died at Batavia Twp., Branch Co., Mi died 4‑13‑1852
71 years old that would make him born 1781. Abigail could have died anywhere
from 1781 to 1790 when Moses went to Canada.
When did Moses marry Elizabeth
Fairchild that is in the will and where? That was the first of any second wife
to surface. I have not found a second wife anywhere else. We found most of
Moses's children when they married living in Onondaga County in 1810‑1820.
I have been working on the
Olmsteads for over 40 years and I have a lot of information. Benjamin &
most of his children settled in Branch County Mich.
I have put Capt., Jabez
Olmsted children in chronological order and the same for Moses. I think it is
very important to be sure of the dates and places.
When & where Benjamin
Olmstead married Tamina Scott, I don't know. I found them first in Evans, Erie
Co., N.Y. 1802. So whether he married in Canada or New York State I don’t know.
Benjamin married 2nd Catharine Skutt and there I don’t know when or
where. Someone from Utah had been doing research and said they were sisters.
There was a Skutt family in Onondaga County at the same time as our Olmsteds
were there.
I added my children’s charts
and my daughter’s children charts. Any question I can help you with, let me
