The following is an abstract from microfilm rolls of a rural newspaper located in Clintonville, WI, containing only mentions of the Olmsted Families living there, plus one or two other amusing stories. A new subscriber, Mary Kay Hills, sent this to me. I will start with the middle of Reel 4, since it contains a mention of her grandmother, Mrs. Ephraim A. Olmsted, nee Jennie Elizabeth Duff, and will continue with earlier reels later.

June 22, 1894, J. W. Morgan, Will Olmsted, E. Am and John Morris were elected delegates to represent the town of Matteson at the congressional and state convention Monday.

 

Sept. 20, 1895, Mr. and Mrs. James Catt, Mr. and Mrs. John Olmsted of Matteson, attended the New London fair.

 

Sept. 27. 1895, Miss Cora Olmstead was visiting with Miss Helen Amell Sunday (Matteson News)

 

Oct. 4, 1895, Embarrass: Among those who attended the Shawano fair were H. Caughell and wife, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Olmsted, J. W. Horgarn and wife and Jud Wait.

 

Oct. 18, 1895, Embarrass News: J. H. Olmsted and Chas. Morris will serve on the jury on the 28th.

 

Nov. 29, 1895, Mrs. Jas. Olmsted, of Antigo, was a recent guest of relatives in this city.

Feb. 14, 1896, Two Important Cases

Atty. F. H. Guernsey, of this city, has begun proceedings in two important cases lately.... He has also sued the Town of Main, Outagamie County, of Mrs. Ephraim Olmsted of Matteson, who last October sustained severe injuries by being thrown from a wagon while riding over a defective highway in the Town of Main. The town board have offered $1200 in settlement which has been refused.

March 13, 1896, The Congregational ministers who held the fellowship meeting here Wed. evening, went over to Embarrass. Thursday and organized a society of Christian Endeavor. John Olmsted was elected president and G. E. Beadle, secretary.

 

March 27, 1896, Mrs. James Olmsted, of Elcho, is the guest of Clintonville friends.

 

Apr. 3, 1896, E. Olmsted was nominated at the town caucus for assessor.

 

Apr. 10, 1896, E. K. Olmsted elected assessor.

 

June 26, 1896, It is about decided to build another cheese factory, upon the farm of Ephraim Olmsted. It will be owned by a stock company.

 

July 31, 1896, J. J. Olmsted has sold a farm in Matteson, to Wm. Malliett, of Aritigo.

 

Aug. 28, 1896, John Olmsted of Elcho, was in the city Monday.

 

Oct. 2. 1896, Burnt Valleys: Frankie Olmsted, a son of Eph Olmsted is dangerously ill.

 

Oct. 9, 1396, Will Olmsted of Matteson, who has been hustling upon the Flambeau River for a year past is home again.

 

Oct. 9, 1896, Mrs. J. H. Olmsted went to Antigo as a delegate to a Congregational convention last week.

 

Jan. 17, 1896, awards at the Farmer's Institute held Tues.

Jan. 14, 1896 in Clintonvilla. Premeium offered by J. F. Meisner for best milk test was awarded to Eph Olmsted

 

Jan. 22, 1897, The suit for damages brought by Mrs. Eph Olmsted, of Matteson, against the town of Main, Outagamie County was tried this week at Appleton, the jury disagreeing. The case will be tried again in April in Shawano County.

Guernsey, of this city is counsel for the plaintiff. Dr. Mielke is at Appleton as a witness in the case.

 

Jan. 22, 1897, Embarrass: Jud Wait of Phlox is in town visiting - son in law of Margaret Olmsted, Matteson

 

Feb. 19, 1897, J. H. Olmsted and family went to Marion Sunday to Church. Jud Waite is moving back to town. John Olmsted has gone to Phlox to assist Jud Waite in moving.

 

Ice 22 inches thick is being harvested.

 

Apr. 2, 1897, Jas. Olmsted, of Elcho, was in town Monday. Will Olmsted is back from a several weeks stay on the Brule River in Michigan. The Brule is a great trout stream and he saw plenty of trout weighing two pounds.

 

May 14, 1897, Wolf River News: Mr. Clayton Olmsted drove over here Friday night and was accompanied back by Miss Lottie Hill to attend a dance at Embarrass.

 

July 2, 1897, Jim Olmsted Burned Out­

The farm house of Jim Olmsted, two miles south of the city, was destroyed by fire last night about 2 o'clock. Mr. Olmsted is up north trout fishing and his son Guy was in town until late last night. He discovered the fire on his return from town and had just time to kick in the door and rescue his mother and several children before the roof fell in. Not even the clothing was saved and but the opportune return of Guy, every inmate of the house would have perished. The cause of the fire is unknown and Mr. Olmsted being away, we are unable to discover if there was any insurance.

 

July 9. 1897, Jim Olmsted, who was burned out last Thursday night in the town of Matteson will rebuild his farm house. He had an insurance of $800 on the building and $200 on his household effects.

 

Aug. 6, 1897, Eph Olmsted has sold his farm on the Wolf River for $2500.

Sept. 3, 1897, Jim Olmsted is building himself a new home in Matteson, on the site on the one that burned.

 

Sept. 17, 1897, Embarrass News: Clayton Olmsted has secured the agency for the Novelty Cutlery Co., of Connecticut for this territory, and has begun taking orders. 

 

Oct. 1, 1897, Jury list for the month upcoming: J. C. Olmsted, Embarrass.

 

Nov. 26, 1897, Bear Creek News: Mrs. George Richardson, Jr. has gone to Appleton as a witness in the Olmstead case.

 

Same issue, Embarrass News. J. H. Olmsted returned from Waupaca sat.­- jury duty. There was an ice cream social held at Mrs. J. Olmste'd last Thursday evening. The proceeds to be applied to the minister's salary. It was a success both socially and financially.

 

Dec. 3, 1897, Verdict of $200:

In the case in the Outagamie County Court that has been prosecuted by Attorney Guernsey of this city, for Mrs. Eph Olmsted for injuries received on a defective highway in the town of Maine, a jury rendered a verdict of $200 for the plaintiff who sued for $5,000.

 

Dec. 10, 1897, Wolf River News: Mrs. J. H. Olmsted and Miss Carrie Curtis of Embarrass, called on their many friends here one day last week.

Feb. 18, 1898, Jury List: Theodore Olmsted ... Matteson.

 

April 8, 1898, John Olmsted elected as a county supervisor (of the county board) representing Embarrass village.

 

May 6, 1898, Clayton Olmsted, an Embarrass boy, while working in a Clintonville shingle mill, sawed off a portion of two fingers Monday.

 

July 15, 1898, Listed among teachers at the Summer School Institute‑‑ Maggie Olmsted, Clintonville

 

June 3, 1898, Mr. Guy Welcome Olmsted and Miss Rachel Church both of Matteson were married at the Congregational parsonage May 30th. (probably by Rev. Gerrie)

 

Sept. 30, 1898, Maggie Olmsted listed as one of teachers licensed to teach in the 1898‑99 school year by Supt. Burnham upon successful completion of summer work at the Institute.
