George Washington Ward - Company B. George first entered service 24 September 1861 in Captain E.L. Alford's Company of the 6th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers. for 12 months. After being discharged in 1862 he re-enlisted in the 6th Mississippi for the war. He continued until 4 July 1863 were he was captured at Vicksburg Mississippi. According to George he escaped a few days after his capture by stealing a doctors horse. Because so many men were injured limbs he concealed the fact that he was wounded in the foot as well as the mouth. He merely pointed to his mouth and the doctor looked at him and said, "Well I can't cut your damn head off, git." He was parled 26 April 1865 courtesy of grand-daughter Dorothy M. Ward Winters |
