After two little sons were born Ben was called to service
in the Southern Army.  He was gone four years, was
captured with many others and carried north and
imprisoned, suffering cold and hunger, almost unbearable. There was one incidentthat could never be forgotten.
While there in a great shed like barracks when a certain
Major came through his littledog always followed him.
One poor hungry fellow snatched the dog, secretly hid
him and they had food.Ben said he asked for only a few
bites. When he finally returned home so weak he could
hardly walk, and could only eat a few bites. He moved his
family to Texas, Mills County in1884 and is buried there.
