James Mathew Medders - Company G James was born 2 June 1843 in Coweta County, Georgia. Around 1850 he move to Randolph, County Alabama. In March 1862 James and his kinfolk attended a recruitment barbecue complete with a brass band and copious amounts of whiskey. James along with his brothers William (Bill) and George they enlisted.. They marched over Cheaha Mountain to Camp Curry. A Camp of Instruction near present day Talladega, Alabama. On 19 March 1862 they mustered into Captain Wood's Company which became Company G. of the 30th Alabama. In August of 1862 James received a disibility discharge for dyspepsia and indigestion. After the war James married and raised his family. He became a merchant and a preacher and enjoyed fox hunting. James died 14 June 1922 at the age of 79 in Dark Corner,Calhoun County, Alabama He is buried at Four Mile Cemetery just south of Jacksonville. His grave is marked with an obelisk as well as a Confederate Marker. courtesy of great great grandson Zane Geier |
