Richard H. Smith - Corporal Company C. born 10 March 1836 in Blount County, Alabama Richard was the third man to join Capt. Musgroves Company. During his four years of service he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and was given the honor of Color Bearer and was carrying the flag July 20,1864 at the Battle of Peachtree Creek in Atlanta Georgia. It was here that Richard was wounded and as a result of infection lost his left arm. After being sent to Macon Georgia he was transferred to Montevallo, Alabama on 21 September 1864. Once Richard was able to travel he was discharged and he returned home to Nectar,Alabama where he lived out the remainder of his life. Richard died 15 December 1916. courtesy of Judy Huntington |
Nathaniel S. Payne - age 24 -Company D Nathaniel was born in Georgia and moved to BiBB County along with his older brother Jonanthan. On Oct. 4, 1861 he enlisted in the Bibb County Rifles under Capt. Alfred V. Gardner. In Feburary 1862 the Bibb County Rifles joined 4th Alabama Battalion then known as the 29th Alabama. They became Company D of the 29th Alabama. Nathaniel died 17 June at Camp Jackson. According to his death claim filed by his widow Sarah Payne on Sept. 25 1862 his personal effects were listed as follows; 1 jacket, 2 pair of pants, 2 pair drawers, 2 shirts, 1 undershirt, 2 pair socks, 1 pair of shoes, 1 cap, 1 blanket and 1 greatcoat. courtesy of Gregory Dale, Bryant Payne and Taylor Gregory Anderson of Monroe County, Alabama Gr and GrGrgrandsons |
