Basics...

[ If you are serious in learning the language, it is best if you go for classes to enable you to pick up speaking and writing.
For me, i just ended my beginner class and starting intermediate course next year. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu~ (Please guide me) =p ]

Learning the hiragana characters... See the funny round letters below? They are called hiragana letters. You might be wondering where these are derived from. They come from the Chinese calligraphy (grass style). They are used for grammatical function words such as particles and inflectional endings.

 a  i  u  e  o
 ka  ki  ku  ke  ko
 sa  shi  su  se  so
 ta  chi  tsu  te  to
 na  ni  nu  ne  no
 ha  hi  fu  he  ho
 ma  mi  mu  me  mo
 ya  yu  yo
 ra  ri  ru  re  ro
 wa  wo
 n

Learning the katakana characters... These are squarish letters and are developed from abbreviation of Chinese characters. They are mainly used to write foreign words.

A a C i E u G e I o
J ka L ki N ku P ke R ko
T sa V shi X su Z se \ so
^ ta ` chi c tsu e te gto
i na j ni k nu l ne m no
n ha q hi t fu w he z ho
} ma ~ mi mu me mo
 ya  yu  yo
 ra  ri  ru  re  ro
 wa  wo
 n

P/s: After reading through the tables, do you feel like fainting? That's how I felt when I first learnt. When you get used to the characters, you will just remember it. So, no worries~ =p There are some more characters to learn. *dun faint, k?*

For the ka-, sa-, ta-, ha- lines, you can add two little dots to transform them into new letters!
e.g. (ka) add two dots --> (ga)
The rest of the letters in the line follow suit.
 ki -->  gi
 ku -->  gu
 ke -->  ge
 ko -->  go

 sa -->  za
 shi -->  ji
 su -->  zu
 se -->  ze
 so -->  zo

 ta -->  da
 chi -->  ji
 tsu -->  zu
 te -->  de
 to -->  do

 ha -->  ba
 hi -->  bi
 fu -->  bu
 he -->  be
 ho -->  bo

Other than these, there is yet an additional line for ha-.
e.g. (ha) add one circle --> (pa)
The rest of the letters in the line follow suit.
 hi -->  pi
 fu -->  pu
 he -->  pe
 ho -->  po

Bad news! That's not the end. One more table and we are done with the kana- letters.

 ya-line  yu-line  yo-line
 kya  kyu  kyo
 gya  gyu  gyo
 sha  shu  sho
 ja  ju  jo
 cha  chu  cho
 ja  ju  jo
ɂ nya ɂ nyu ɂ nyo
Ђ hya Ђ hyu Ђ hyo
т bya т byu т byo
҂ pya ҂ pyu ҂ pyo
݂ mya ݂ myu ݂ myo
 rya  ryu  ryo

That's all for lesson one, folks~!
