The Nature of God in Names and Pictures

A picture is worth a thousand words they say, and as represented from this page, many have been the attempts to portray the majesty of the Father, the compassion of the Son, or even the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. These images are not to be worshiped, but to draw our hearts
in worship unto the God of love, whose image we are meant to portray in our loves.

To God, names are important, for, "WE have a new name written down in heaven." (Luke 10:20), and God has often given people a new name, as when Jesus said to Simon, "thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." (Matthew 16:18) The Bible reveals much about God by the names used for Him, including when He told Moses, "My Name is I AM."

Consider what the translations of each name tell you about the nature of God, and what we can expect of such a one.

EL: God ("mighty, strong, prominent")
ELOHIM: God (a plural noun, more than two)
EL SHADDAI: God Almighty
ADONAI: God; Lord � a substitute for JHVH

JEHOVAH: God; (the) LORD . transliterated from YHWH

or written "YHWH" without vowel points.
