The Law - Sweeter than Honey
Back to Home Page
Back to The Law Page 1
REVIEW: We have seen that David refers to The Law as being "sweeter than honey," that this Law is synonomous with the Law of Moses and the Law of God, and that great emphasis is placed on the delights, benefits and blessings of keeping The Law.
Now we will look at, 1) some examples of this Law, 2) why it is found, particularly as enunciated by David, to be "sweeter than honey" and 3) the Law's New Testament summation.

Unlike other ancient laws, e.g. the Code of Hammurabi of Babylon and the laws of Egypt, the Hebrew Law was given by God as the foundation of all human duty, and the LORD's blessings were contingent upon that Law being obeyed.

                                              2- Sweet as Honey

"In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul."  Psalm 94:19

"From my sinful thoughts, my vain thoughts, my sorrowful thoughts,
my griefs, my cares, my conflicts, I will hasten to the Lord; he
has divine comforts, and these will not only console but actually
delight me. How sweet are the comforts of the Spirit! - C.H. Spurgeon"

Today (3-07-'02) as I was walking through the park I though about honey as food for the body.  Honey is considered a wonderful food, because it contains both natural sugar and also useful nutrients.  It can give the body a quick shot both of delight and life giving energy.  As the above psalm verse, expanded on by the great evangelist Spurgeon makes clear, God's Law and His ways and the comfort of His wisdom and presence are the spiritual equivalent of honey.

Riches, material goods and even body comforts are, as it were, only skin deep.  But we are spiritual, and His Law is sweet as honey, yes even the drippings of the honey-comb, to our very being.  This was particularly so to King David as he contrasted human nature, particularly his own but also that of the surrounding pagan peoples and their propensities, with the life sustaining nectar of God's ways or Law.
