| vs3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called us by glory and virtue, |
| HIS DIVINE POWER: Divine relates to divinity, or God, and Peter writes, His (singular) divine power directly after God and Jesus our Lord. The implications of divinity rest on both of those PERSONS, and yet every Jew learnt form childhood, {*12} Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One. THE DIVINE POWER But what about Divine Power? Perhaps we often skip over references to Gods power, but if we are going to believe for the all things that pertain of this verse, we need to have a more profound appreciation of divine power. Those things include: all things that pertain to life and godliness; (vrs. 3). exceedingly great and precious promises; (vrs. 4). partakers of the divine nature; (vrs. 4). abundant enterance into the everlasting kingdom; (vrs. 11) WHO is this power exercised for? Peter says, those (of) like precious faith. Paul writes that the gospel {*14} is the power of God for salvation for everyone that believes and that {*15} the exceeding greatness of His power (is) towards us who believe. WHAT is this power exercised over? To the legion of demons in the Gaderine demoniac He said, {*16} Go! and they went. To the wind and the waves of Galilee He commanded, {*17} Peace, be still! and those elements of nature obeyed. (But of you and I He merely requires, {*30} Come unto Me all you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.) WHAT is the extent and use of this power then? The writer to the Hebrews tells us that Jesus is {*13} upholding all things by the word of His power and Paul affirms that {*16} by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on the earth, (thrones, dominions, principalities or powers)... and in Him all things hold together (consist, KJV). This DIVINE POWER then, is the attribute of a {*19,*20} "LIVING GOD" who has demonstrated omnipotence in all areas. SCIENTISTS- study the results of, He made the worlds. (Hebrews 1:2b) THEOLOGIANS- study the result of, (He) spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets. (Hebrews 1:1) CHRISTOLOGERS- study results of "He has in these last days spoken to us by His Son." (Hebrews 1:2) CHRISTIANS- are the result of "when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high." (Hebrews 1:3b - KJV) - and - "as many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the children of God." (John 1:12) |
