| A Blurb On (My) Ancient History The history of ancient peoples, their inventions, wars, loves, fears and their rise and falls, fascinates some and bores others: obviously I am in the former category. Back on History Main Page is a bibliography of books I have accessed in the last five or six years, including the NIV Study Bible. Part of my interest undoubtedly comes from being a Christian student of the Bible, and the NIV Study Bible has many informative footnotes, e.g. the placement of the Jewish Exodus as 1446 BC from I Kings 6:1, or the discussion of Aramaic (called "Syriack" in the KJV) under Daniel 2:4. When I read of Troy's destruction in Homer's Iliad, I wonder what was happening in Egypt about that time (c. 1150 BC). Or, when "The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold," (Byron, "The Destruction of Sennacherib"), what was happening in Athens about then, c.700 BC? Why was Cleopatra Greek and not Egyptian? And were the Egyptians the earliest civilization? Well, I have greatly enjoyed beginning my own odyssey through these *"Realms of Gold," and for my own sake have recorded some of the map on these pages. Below is a list of Peoples and Empires, selecting the underlined link will take you to more in depth information, generally taken from other web-sites, with acknowledgement. Go ahead, play Herodotus and visit the nations of the Ancient World! *John Keats, "Much have I traveled in the realms of gold.." |
| Here are the names of many ancient Near East / Middle East City States and Empires. If the link is not underlined, I haven't done the site yet. |
