(10 points) Print out this page. Open a new document in Microsoft Word (or an equivalent word-processing program), and type your name, Philosophy 201 and your section number at the top of the page using Times New Roman font. Then type answers to the following questions. For each question, type the number, then the answer. When you have finished, print the Microsoft Word document on white paper and staple the printout of this page on the front. Failure to do any of these steps will result in loss of points. 1. (10 points) Read the syllabus for this class. How many points are possible in this class (total)?

2. (8 points) How many tests will we have during the semester?

3. (8 points) How much is this assignment worth if you turn it in late?

4. (8 points) What is the format of tests in this class and how is it different for make-up tests?

5. (8 points) If you miss a test and have a documented excuse, how long do you have to take a make-up (meaning can you wait until the end of the semester, for example?)

6. (15) Read the first paragraph on the front page of my web site (www.geocities.com/cogburn83). When did Plato live? In what form did he write? Who was the main character in his work? What did this character think wisdom began with?

7. (15 points) Go to the front page of my web site (www.geocities.com/cogburn83). Click on the link for The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Click on Principal Site (USA). Choose P, scroll down to Plato and choose "shorter ethical works." Read the introduction to this article (Plato's Shorter Ethical Works). What is the main principle of the dialogue the Crito? Plato's character Socrates doubts the teachability of what? What is the style of conversation used by Socrates in Plato's early dialogues called?

8. (9 points) Read the first chapter of Ultimate Questions by Rauhut. Answer the Food for Thought question on page 7 (the one about Socrates and the unexamined life)

9. (9 points) Read pages 4-9 of Philosophy Through Fiction and Film by Porter. Answer Study Question number 2 on page 9.
