stretched string animations

Each animation above shows a stretched string with constant tension along its length but with variable linear mass density. Transverse waves move along the string. The speeds of sound are as shown. Absorbing boundary conditions are used at the right and left edges. This is meant to be suggestive of a nanoparticle embedded in a matrix. Dissipation of vibrational energy in the blue region is limited by back reflection from the discontinuity. (C++ programs used: line4.cpp scragif.cpp)
