The Toy Box
Second thoughts...
I first wrote the previous review almost 3 1/2 years ago.  Where does the time go?  In that time, the most notable change involving The Toy Box would be it's release on a spectacular DVD from Something Weird Video.  A recent revisit to The Toy Box proves that the film has held up remarkably well for me.  It wonderfully weird and sleazy and the cinematography just can't be appreciated fully on VHS.
The VHS that I had tracked down years ago wasn't in the best shape.  The picture wasn't sharp and during the second half of the film it jumped all over the place.  The DVD print is just about pristine.  I really couldn't ask for more from a movie of this type.  I can honestly say that I don't think this movie has ever or will ever look better than this.
So, regardless of the presentation, the big question is how does the film holds up a couple years later?  I just don't think I had enough appreciation for it the first time around.  I think that in the past few years I've spent a lot more time watching exploitation movies and I have more to compare this too.  To make a long story short, I think the film is simply wonderful.  The bizarre story is simply delightful, it plays off like a completely perverted and colorful Twilight Zone.  Uschi is nothing short of stunning here, that scene with the living bed is one of the hottest she's ever done.  She is photographed here just as beautifully as she has been by Russ Meyer.
The beautiful presentation alone would be enough for me to classify this disc as a 'must have' for fans of perverted 70s cinema, but as is typical with Something Weird Video, this is just the beginning of the fun.  First off is the second feature contained on the disc, Toys Are Not For Children.  The movie is pretty enjoyable and presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio.  It's not nearly as explicit as The Toy Box, but it is dirty feeling and warrants a review of its own.  The other features focus on either toys or sexual deviance.  All in all, the disc is a good time and has become one of my favorite titles from Something Weird Video.
