The Positive Effects of Measure O
While Measure O did not become law, it did serve to educate many people about the issues involved in coffee production, which in turn has increased the demand for certified coffee.
TransFair reports that Fair Trade Certified coffee imports have risen dramatically, from a mere 1.9 million lbs. per year in 1999 to the 33 million lbs. that were imported this year.
After a two year campaign fair trade coffee supporter have succeeded in getting the nation's largest coffee importer, Procter and Gamble to offer fair trade certified coffee. According to Valerie Orth of Global Exchange, this agreement is a giant step towards helping the 25 million coffee growing families around the world receive a fair price for their product. Orth said that the media coverage generated by Measure O "was instrumental in raising awareness about fair-trade coffee."
