Thomas Coo first appears on records in a list of jurors at an inquisition
held at Thaxted, co. Essex, on Tuesday before the Feast of St. James, 30
Henry VI, (July 25, 1452), for proof of age of Philippa one of the
daughters of John Helion of Bumpstead-Helion, and one of the heirs of the
great Swynbourne-Boutetourt estates. (Chancery Inq. Post Mort. no. 49,
29-30 Henry VI.) Earlier members of the Coo family had previously been
connected with the same subject. The next mention found of Thomas Coo is
as a witness (together with Thomas Copyn, et als.) to an indenture between
William Pykenham, archdeacon, John Redbourne, clerk, et als., dated on the
Feast of St. Martin the Bishop, 18 Edward IV. (Nov. 11, 1478.) John
Redbourne was rector of Gestingthorpe and part of the tithes of that said
parish were held by the College of St. John the Baptist at Stoke-Clare,
co. Suffolk, of which college Willliam Pykenham was dean. (Dugdale's
Monasticon Anglicanum vol.8, p.1661) In 1495, Thomas Coo, by William
Gilbert his attorney, was plaintiff against Robert George of Walden, co.
Essex, bocher, for a debt of 45 sh.; also against John Tytrell alias Jakys
of Great Bardfield, co. Essex, bocher, for a debt of 40 sh.; and also
against John Spylman of Thaxted, co. Essex, bocher, for a debt of 40 sh.
(Common Pleas Rolls, roll 974, mem. 230, Essex, Mich., 11 Henry VII,
[1495].) In 17 Henry VII, (1501), Thomas Coo acquired lands in Hempstead,
co. Essex, called Woodbirds (Court Rolls, Honour of Clare, vol. 1859, p.
64), and in 1503 he was an executor of the will of his brother William Coo
which is the last mention found of him; and he probably died about 1507
in which year John (fifth generation) Coo first appears as paying an entry
fine (fee) on inheriting ancestral estates in Gestingthorpe. Thomas Coo
lived through the turbulent period of the civil wars commonly called "The
Wars of the Roses" which raged intermittently from 1455 to 1485. Many
classes and series of English records are very defective during this
destructive period, and lack of records has caused prolonged research to
fail to positively prove either the parentage of the children of the
Thomas Coo of whom the above records are given; but he is the only Coo to
be found in northern Essex who can fill the gap between John (third
generation) Coo and the latter's certain descendant John (fifth
generation) Coo, and his associations and the appearance of the name
"Thomas" in generations five, six, and seven, seems to establish beyond
reasonable doubt that Thomas Coo was eldest son and heir of John (third
generation) Coo, and father of the following three Children: i. John. b.
about 1460, eldest son and heir. ii. William, b. about 1465. iii. Thomas,
b. about 1470. appears as a witness to the will of William Fyche of
Hempstead, proved May 26, 1501. (Arch of Colchester,Clerke, fol. 15.) In
1509 he was a trustee of the estate of his brother William Coo; and in
1515 Thomas Coo and Richard Westly, executors of the will of Thomas Westly
of Hempstead, were sued by Thomas Westley of Panfield, co. Essex, in
regard to his father's estate. Thomas Coo of Hempstead, co. Essex, d.
before 1521. His will cannot be found. He m. Joane __________. The will of
Joane Coo, widow of Thomas Coo of Hempstead was dated Aug 2, 1521. To the
churches of Hempstead and Old (Great) Sampford, and to the latter church
for masses for the souls of William Coo and his wife. To William Petytt
certain goods. To Agnes Clayden, daughter of William Coo. To Isabel
Dawkyn. All lands to be sold to Thomas Freeman, if he will buy them,
according to my husband's will; if not they to be sold to best advantage.
