Silas enlisted in the Union Army on the 12th of October, 1864, at the age of 50, in Co. K., 125th Regt., Ohio Vols. While on his way to join his regiment he contracted acute pneumonia. He left the troop train at Nashville TN. On Oct 23, 1864 and was admitted to Gen. Hospt. No. 8 Nashville, TN, and died of that disease on Oct. 30th, 1864. Silas is buried at Nashville and has a headstone at Alexander Cemetery in Hebbardsville, Ohio. Nothing is known of the reason for his enlistment at 50 years of age, with the war already, all but over.
