| The Family of Jacob & Eve Neff Jr. |
| Jacob was born ca. 1775-1785 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was enumerated in Somerset in 1810; in Preston County, West Virginia in 1820; and moved to the vicinity of Sugarcreek Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio before 1830. A Jacob Neff was taxed for one cow in 1828 in adjacent German (now Clark) Township of Holmes County, Ohio. He apparently died by 1830 when a widow, Eve Neff, boen ca 1785, was recorded in Tuscarawas County's Sugarcreek Township. They were likely married around 1803/04. As jacob Nafe Jr., he, along with his brother Christopher, was a defendant in an 1804 eviction action in Somerset. Both Jacob Sr. & Jacob Jr. are listed in Turkeyfoot Township tax records for 1811 and 1813. In 1814 only a Jacob (Sr. or Jr. ?) No one after 1814. The census of 1820 for Preston County, (West) Virginia shows a Jacob Neff, with Jacob's 1810 Somerset family moved foward 10 years, plus three sons and a daughter born between 1810 and 1820. Then by 1830, Eve Neff, the widow, son Gabriel, and daughters Susanna , Magdalena, and Catherine were in Tuscarawas County along with the three sons and daughter recorded in Preston in 1820; and a daughter Ann born in 1820/21 after the census. There is little doubt that the Pennsylvania family of 1810, the (West) Virginia family of 1820, and the Ohio family of 1830 are the same. The following table illustrates the three censuses: |
