| A "Throw-Away" Commentary- July 6th 2003
Well, I guess its been a little while since I wrote a commentary. I have received various feedback from both workers and fans concerning my last spiritually driven commentary and I just want everyone to know that their comments are appreciated. And, a thanks to everyone that visits my site and actually takes the time to read my commentaries. Thank you all very much. I tend not to like writing commentaries about nothing, but every once in awhile I think it is necessary. I havent had much to write about wrestling wise lately strictly because there has been a definite lack of wrestling going on in Ontario lately. But I thought that I needed to do an update, so here ya go. I guess Ill talk about my last few shows and let you know what I thought about them and my matches in them. My last 3 shows have all been NEO shows. The first of the 3 was on June 21st vs. Kris Chambers. I had never worked Chambers in a singles match before. We trained together at the NSP dojo early on in our training days, but other than that (and a tag match we had at a Jewish high school for the Twins that was really fun) we have never been in a ring together in front of a crowd. I want to start by saying that Kris is friggin awesome. He is so smooth and natural in the ring, and he giveser like no one else does. That has been evident since his early days of training. He has always given 110% in wrestling, and it is because of that that I think hell be one of the guys in Ontario that eventually gets signed. But damn, he has so much time on his hands... hes so damn young. Anyways, back to the match. We were curtain jerking the show so I knew our spot on the show was obviously extremely important. Dangerboy once told me that the 1st match of the night is the most important match of the night next to the main event (if not even more important). It sets the tone for the whole show. But, the first match is also hard because you are somewhat constricted to what you can do. What I mean is, the first match of the show cant involve a million crazy high spots and huge bumps or it just kills the rest of the show, making it hard to "one-up". It just takes away from the whole show in general. So... me and Kris decided to keep it fairly simple. I had an idea to work the opening around the headlock, but Kris took it one step further and said we should work the whole match around the headlock. Im always up for a challenge so I said sure. By a challenge I mean that NEO fans have seen people risk their lives in n NSP ring (myself included). Therefore, it can be a daunting task to please an NSP crowd. I thought that if Kris and I could keep the crowd interested by working frickin headlocks, then we had achieved a minor victory in our young careers. I think we did a fairly good job. We both thought we could have done 10 times better, but thats just our nature as workers. All of the workers that watched the match told me they enjoyed it, so I guess it couldnt have been that bad. One person who I enjoyed getting feedback from was Sinn. Since his injury, Sinn has been kind of like the ring leader in the locker room. So... after my match, I sought out Sinn to give me a synopsis of my match. All of his pointers were greatly appreciated and very helpful. Thanks Sinn. Im always learning, and I want to hear criticism from anybody and everybody on my matches. And Sinn is a damn good guy to get criticized from. A valuable learning experience. Get better soon Sinn. And if we ever go out to eat again... you know not to take me to East Side Marios! Later on the same show, I answered P Wees challenge to anyone in the back for JCs title after he awesome-bombed my old buddy Sandbag through a table. I came out like a house of fire and hit my finish out of nowhere on JC. I was seconds away from finally winning the Indy title, when yet again, P Wee screwed me over and broke up the pin. This time I had had enough. Much to the approval of the NSP crowd I knocked P Wee out with one big haymaker. I then held him down so Robb the Reff could hit a big splash on him. Then for fun, I made a 3 count. What I liked best about this segment was the crowd reaction. The crowd went friggin bananas and popped huge for Robb the Reff. I was so happy. And, I was having a blast out there. Afterwards, Robb the Reff thanked me for getting him over. Hey, I feel it was the least I could do for Robb. I have had countless matches that went 100 times better than they would have gone strictly because Robb was reffing and opened the lines of communication up wonderfully. Any pops that Robb gets are well deserved. :) The next 2 NSP shows were free shows. One at the CHIN picnic, and one at Optimist Park for Canada Day. They were both really fun shows. I got to work Lazz at both shows which is awesome because I hadnt worked him since our feud back in FSPW for the Internet strap. It was nice to hear from NSP management that they knew they could throw me and Lazz in the ring knowing we would put on a good match. The matches on both shows were essentially the same except for a few differences. 1) Lazz dumped me on my bucket the 1st show, and I didnt let him do that the 2nd show. 2) The 2nd show was a lot more fun because the crowd was into the wrestling. Therefore, Lazz and I were more comfortable in Niagara, and worked the crowd much better on the Canada Day show. The only thing that was hard for me on these shows was that we were wrestling in front of people that werent really wrestling fans and me and Lazz had the difficult task of trying to put on a face-vs.-face match. Not very easy when no one knows who the hell you are (minus a few NSP marks in the crowd). All in all, I think we did a pretty good job. Plus, I had a hell of a lot of fun at the Canada Day show. I just love working crowds... and as Ive said many times before, I love working in front of kids. Its so awesome. Anyways, I went over at CHIN and Lazz went over on Canada Day. Both fun shows and shows that I hope helped build the NSP fanbase. *on a side note... if last years Miss Niagara is reading this, call me:)... Lazz has my number ;) And on that wonderful note, I think Ill stop here. I guess Ill also mention that a lot of Ontario guys are getting in contact with the Fed. Thats great to hear. So many guys in Ontario deserve it. I am personally gonna start sending out tapes within the next couple of weeks... so Ill keep you updating on that (obviously) if anything happens with that. Im in the best shape of my life, so I guess now is a better time than any to start givener and send out tapes. Oh ya, and I hear Dangerboy is putting out a Vol #3. Go buy it! Support Ontario Indy wrestling. Thanks for reading. "Completely" yours, Cody Steele |
