                                   PREFACE

The origins of this work can be traced back to 1987 when I attended a meeting called by  John Blamire-Brown for people interested in forming a Local History Group in Codsall.John's enthusiasm was so persuasive that I soon found myself volunteering to set out,   with a tape recorder, to try to capture on tape the memories of local inhabitants and to build up a picture of what the area had been like in their youth.

Thus in 1987 my first meeting with Mrs Porteous took place. Neither of us realised at that time that this was to be the first of several, as new memories came to the surface. I am therefore indebted to Mrs Porteous for her time, interest and patience. The following pages are the story which has developed from the tapes.

They give an insight into life in the villages of Codsall Wood and Codsall when Mrs  Porteous was young. She would like to make it clear that these are personal memories and therefore she cannot vouch for their complete accuracy.

I would also like to thank the other members of the Historical Society Working Party,  particularly John Blamire-Brown for his encouragement and David Whitehead for organising the reproduction of  the photographs and the printing. It is published by the
Codsall and Bilbrook Civic Society.
