SPONDON ROVERS MATCH REPORT (HOME FIXTURE)

With the next three games against teams at the foot of the table Codnor were hoping to increase their advantage of five points at the top starting with visitors Spondon Rovers who should on paper be a formality but we must not underestimate them as they could quite easily surprise us.

From the kick off Codnor started strongly and opened the scoring within five minutes when F.Kirk set up J.Griffiths for his ninth goal of the season, J.Miles then put a cross over to the back post to unmarked T.Richardson to score his fourth of the season. Codnor were not playing as well as the previous week but the Spondon defence were struggling to cope with the boys pace around the area and leading scorer F.Kirk used his strength to hold off the challenges and run through the centre of the defence and beat the Spondon keeper with a shot into the bottom corner of the net, minutes later F.Kirk scored his second of the game after a pass from J.Griffiths as the keeper failed to gather the ball which broke loose for a simple opportunity to slot home, with half time upon the boys F.Kirk claimed his hat-trick after a pass from L.Wilson and Condor went in 5-0 at half time in a pleasing first 30 minutes.

Two changes were made at the interval and Codnor pressured Spondon from the kick off and substitute M.Housley took only minutes to score his sixth goal of the season but Spondon hit back when they was awarded a free kick on the edge of the area which was superbly struck over the wall and the ball went in under the crossbar leaving S.Neal Codnors keeper with no chance .F.Kirk then in a ten minute spell scored his second hat-trick of the game to take his tally for the season to twenty-one goals after passes from R.Cooke, R.Burke and M.Housley set up his opportunities, Spondon weren`t causing the boys defence many real problems and didn`t produce many scoring opportunities as the lads were battling for every ball, from one of the few corners Codnor won J.Miles crossed a ball to the back post and unmarked defender T.Sanderson controlled the ball before firing the home from close range to score his first goal of the season for the boys, with only minutes remaining F.Kirk completed his excellent performance by setting up R.Cooke for his second of the season to make the final score 11-1.

Codnor today took 80% of their chances in front of goal an excellent ratio in a performance that was not one of their best displays of this season but full credit to the team for winning in fine style.
