HEANOR JUNIORS MATCH REPORT (HOME FIXTURE)
Codnor kept up their push for the league championship with today`s win at home, it was another day of slightly boggy
conditions with a stiff breeze blowing down the length of the pitch. From the kick-off Codnor pressured the Heanor
goal relentlessly with Heanor intent on playing with their whole team behind the ball and looking to hit codnor on
the break, this tactic frustrated Codnor`s attacking style of play and kept Codnor`s` striker`s at bay, until a corner
from J. Miles was met by the unmarked R.Burke and he volleyed the ball home just under the cross bar taking the boys
into a 1-0 lead with 15minutes played. Codnor had plenty of half chances which came and went and from one of Heanor`s
only ventures into Codnor`s half they equalized to make it 1-1 after a goal mouth scramble which was initially saved
by L.Mckenna but a Heanor attacker reacted the quickest to pounce as the Codnor defence looked to rely on one another
instead of taking the responsibility of kicking the ball to safety. Codnor kept plugging away and scored a 2nd goal
when the Heanor keeper only managed to kick the ball straight to J.Miles from a poor goal kick and he clinically
punished his mistake by chipping the ball over keeper J.Cherry to take Codnor into a 2-1 lead which they held to
half time, the boys could have scored on at least two or three more occasions and Heanor were lucky to be just the
one goal behind.
A tactical change was made inside the first five minutes of the second half and substitute L.Wilson
took just minutes to capitalize on a goal mouth scramble to increase the boys lead to 3-1, Heanor who were still
relying for an opportunity of hitting Codnor on the break were fortunate to pull back to 3-2 after a ball played up
the middle was again saved by L.Mckenna but Heanor again were quicker to the rebound. Two further changes were made
to give some fresh legs to the boys and Codnor began bombarding the Heanor goal but struggled to find the back of the
net until a shot from T.Richardson was parried forward into the path of the in rushing J.Griffiths who easily slotted
the ball home from 6 yards out to stretch Codnor`s lead to 4-2 which they had deserved. Heanor rarely tested the boys
throughout the half as Codnor dominated the proceedings and finally killed the game off with their 5th goal of the
game when a throw by R.Cooke was picked up by J.Miles who skipped by a Heanor defender and whipped over an excellent
cross near the byline whick was met again by R.Burke who hit another superb volley home from close range completing
his brace and securing a 5-2 Codnor win.
Excellent performances all round considering the boys had not played a single
game for four weeks due to the bad weather, but this win today for the boys takes their run to 13 wins in a row in
the league to remain top of the league WELL DONE!
