My Teaching Philosophy
The reason I want to be a middle school teacher is so I can make an impact in young teenager's lives. I have worked with middle school students and seen them going through huge changes in their lives and loved being a part of it. Not only do I want to get Science drilled into my students' heads or cheers flowing though my cheerleaders' veins, but being a positive role model for each student is very important. To be a positive role model time, effort, knowledge, a listening ear, and a helpful heart have to be involved. Flexibility is also a huge factor in assisting these young adults and without it they don't have much room to grow. It doesn't necessarily mean letting them learn at their own pace in the class, but some mature slower and need the extra time and maybe a push in the right direction. Since those of this age group are experiencing such big changes they need someone who will be patient and understanding to guide them. I believe that being a teacher should not only get students to learn classroom material, but help then grow and mature as a person. It is important that each student learns responsibility. Once they leave middle school and enter high school they have a lot more to deal with, so giving them a sufficient amount of responsiblity in a lower grade prepares them for that transition.
I have found these young, developing teenagers to fit my personality better than any other grade. Something that has come naturally to me is seeing things as they see it. I can get on their level of thinking and apply that towards their learning. They are at a crucial stage where they are finding out who they are and always are in need of that extra encouragement. Since I have been a middle school cheerleading coach my girls have made me realize how much I respect I have to give them to get it in return.
