1.Keyboard Port-This port is for keyboards only.They come in two different varieties.The type that fits one kind of the ports is an IBM PS/2 connector.An older keyboard fits a bigger connector than the PS/2 connector.Those connectors are called AT connectors.

2.Serial Port-This port is mainly used for joysticks,game controllers,and other gadgets.These ports are commonly called a communications port(COM port).Most motherboards provide two or more of these ports with it.

3.Parallel Printer Port-This port is used mainly for connecting printers.Nowadays,they're also used for other external devices.

4.PS/2 Mouse Port-This is basically a port on a computer for your mouse.It eliminates the different mice that use a serial port.

5.USB Port-This port is frequently use by external devices,like digital cameras for example.These ports are very useful if you usually upload data from external devices.

6.FireWire Port-This port is similar to the USB port except it generates more data but transfers data at a slower rate than the USB port.This port is also used for connecting external devices with a FireWire jack.

7.Game Port-This port comes on a sound card.This port is used for gaming devices like the joystick or a gaming controller.

8.MIDI Port-The MIDI(Musical Instrument Digital Interface)ports also comes on a sound card.This is a special port used for connecting musical instruments with a MIDI jack.

9.Infrared Port-This port allows wireless transferring of files and information between two computers without the use of cables.You can think of it as a t.v. remote transferring data to the t.v. without you having to walk up to the t.v.and changing the channel automatically.

10.SCSI Port-The SCSI(Small Computer System Interface)port comes on adapter cards.It's a mainly used port for the scanner.Nowadays,they can be used by any external device with an SCSI jack.
