First, we must come to an understanding about this idea of "Doing"
something to be saved. There are many who teach that there is nothing for
us to do and that there is nothing that we can do.
Truly, the scriptures teach that salvation is a gift of God and that there is nothing that I can do to earn or merit that salvation. However, that does not preclude God from putting conditions upon salvation that people must meet.
Did not Jesus say, "not everyone that saith unto me Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven." (Matthew 7:21). This does not constitute "earning" our salvation, but simply meeting the commands of God in order to be obedient to Him.
Naaman was told by the prophet Elisha to dip seven times in the Jordan river to cleans his leprosy. Certainly Naaman could not have earned the cleansing of his leprosy nor did the water of the Jordan river have any special powers. However, in obeying the command of God he was given the gift of his leprosy being cleansed.
It is the same with our salvation. We cannot earn salvation, but by
humble obedience to the commands of God we can have our sins washed away
by the blood of the Lamb.
