Anglicans Cool it on a Hot Topic - Hell

by Clint Harper

The above is the title of an article recently published by the Associated Press.  The general theme of the article is simple, the Anglicans have "rejected the idea of hell as a place of fire, pitchforks and screams of unending agony, describing it instead as annihilation for all who reject the love of God.  Sound familiar?  Yes indeedy!  It's the same old thing the Jehovah Witnesses have been saying for many years now, and the idea is now catching on with other denominations.
A report from the Anglican church is quoted as saying, "Christians have professed appalling theologies which made God into a sadistic monster and left searing psychological scars on many."  For something to be true or false is not reliant upon what "Christians" profess.  Whether something is professed or denounced by someone, does not make it the truth or make it false.  Truth is independant of believers or non-believers.  This "appalling theology" was professed by the one for whom Christians are named, Christ.  Jesus said, "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal"  (Matt. 25:46).   If the righteous are going to be allowed to enter into life eternal (Heaven) then those who are not righteous will enter into everlasting punishment (Hell).  If the one (Hell) is not real, then the other (Heaven) is not real either, because Jesus spake about both in the same breath.
Then there is the part about "leaving searing psychological scars on many" by professing this "appalling" theology.  In this day and time there are many who think they are smarter than God.  They think they know what is best for people, because "they are one."  They have their certificates and diplomas hanging on their walls and that makes them the utmost authority on what is best for mankind.  This kind of thinking is exactly what is driving and draging people away from the almightly God.  The Bible still says, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death"  (Prov. 14:12).  And that, "...the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men"  (1 Cor. 1:25).  Let it not be forgotten that God is All Knowing and All Wise, and that man is not.
The report is quoted again as saying, "Hell is not eternal torment, but it is the final and irrevocable choosing of that which is opposed to God so completely and so absolutely that the only end is total non-being."  It is true that one must choose either that which is opposed to God or that which is in agreance with God.  But, to say that "hell is not eternal torment....the only end is total non-being" is not found in the Bible.  The Bible still says, "....it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched"  (Mk. 9:43-44).
Hell is as real as Heaven.  Both are everlasting.  Both were preached by Christ.  "If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God"  (1 Peter 4:11).
