Baseball was a major pastime in the old Canal Zone. From Pee-Wee League to Fastlich League. The kids would play. Some kids would even play stick ball and others with hit stones over the Cocoli Gym Roof. It was all in an effort to improve their baseball skills.
The military stationed in Panama also had teams and in the mid 40's the New York Yankees did their spring training in Panama. They held various exhibition games at Balboa Stadium. The Yankee Clipper was there. Yes, Joe DiMaggio! What a treat for all us little kids. In fact, it was a big deal to have lots of the major leaguers playing ball in the old Canal Zone.
