Harley-Davidsons in Panama
The above Harley is a 1930 model. The two features that give it away is the tool kit under the horn below the handlebars and the 2 heandlights. In the 1940 models the company went to one large headlight in the middle. The above picture was taken at Fort Amador. The young troop is a friend of my father. They were both assigned to the same battery of the US Army Coastal Defenses in Panama.
Above we see a very rare civilian model of the 1930 Harley Davidson Motorcycle... She is really beautiful!
Along came World War II and the Harley-Davidson became the bike of choice of the dispatch riders. Here is one that has been refurbished as it would have appeared back then... Below is how it looked before it was brought up to speed.
This 1940's Harley-Davidson needs a bit of loving care to get it looking really tough again... Below picture is brought courtesy of a Cajun's Dad who is aboard this Harley Davidson somewhere in Germany in 1941... looking good!
After the war years the Canal Zone Police Force added some Harley_Davidsons to the Traffic Control Section. This picture shows a detachment of CZPD Motorcycle Officers standing next to their bikes in The Prado with John Steven's Circle as well as Sosa Hill behind the unit. (Circa 1946)
Above is a 1927 Harley Davidson
I have many fond memories of the Harley Davidsons in Panama Canal Zone ridden by  the Canal Zone Police Department. Late at night to hear the varooom of their bikes when I was a little kid snug safely in my bed gave me a real warm feeling. I knew that all was well with my world. I wrote my reflections into a little story... Click below to read more...
The movie The Great Escape featured some really out of this world sigment of Steve McQueen on a motorcycle. That jump of over some 85 feet was just awesome! No, it was not a Harley-Davidson bike but a 1962 Triumph. Although Steve McQueen was a great bike rider that stunt was done by a double. Great movie!
The Harley-Davidson Motorcycles still rules. It is a fantastic bike manufactured in the good old United States of America. It sells so well that there is usally a waiting list for a new bike at the dealer.
