When it's time for D2 to call it a day,one thing is for sure! Bruno Ravel will be able to make one
hell of a good living as a producer.
D2's sixth album once again sees Bruno handling production duties, and he just keeps getting better
each time he doe's it.
D2's first album of the new millenium sees the band taking another step forward with their songwriting,
which has gone from cock-rock masterpieces to grunge tinged epics.
As soon as you hit the play button it's clear that you in for a good time,"Grind" kicks things off in good
fashion, a mid tempo rocker that hooks you and pulls you in on first listen.
Once again D2 have decided to re-record some tracks from the "Cockroach" album and the first one to
get the millenium treatment is "When She's Good She's Good",this is D2 at their very best, hooks, hooks
and more hooks piled on top, just pure brilliance!
If "Six Million Dollar Man" had been recorded by a band like Lit then it would have gone straight to the top
of the charts and be known to millions,it's written by Paul Laine and is in the same vein as "Jaded" from
"Four The Hard Way" so you know it's gonna be great.
"She's Gone" is the big ballad on this album and once again it's a track that takes a few listens to make it's
mark,it's a very laid back breezy kinda tune and is great to chill out to.
If "She's Gone" left you all chilled out then you dont get much chillin time as "Dead Drunk & Wasted"
thunders from your speakers and shakes you back to life,it's a huge track that starts off very similar to
"Goin All the Way" but with loads more balls to it,once again D2 add a huge chorus and leaves you with a
song that you'll be singing for months.
One thing you will notice about this album is that it's a lot darker than previous efforts(excluding Dawn)
the band seem to have found a sound that will keep the hardcore fans happy but that also allows the band
to grow and not keep repeating themselves.
"Dead Dog" is a prime example of this, this actually reminds me of the style of music that Winger tried and
failed with on their "Pull" album, really heavy and moody but still highly melodic.
With "My Secret" we see D2 at their bravest yet,it's another Paul Laine written track and is like nothing
else D2 have ever recorded,it's a beautiful acoustic driven ballad and it's such a shame that the whole world
wont get to enjoy it.
Bruno handles lead vocals on the track "Cherry Cherry",i hated this track when i first heard it,i thought it
was really lame and sounded like a bad 70's glam band, but as time has gone by it has grown on me,it's not
a track i'll ever really like,Bruno doesn't have a bad voice and it fits the vibe of the song pretty well, but when you have a singer as good as Paul Laine in your band, why bother!!
Things get all Alice in Chains'ish with "Get In The ring",think Alice in Chains with a catchy chorus and your
pretty close to "Get In The Ring".
The album closes with "Walk It Like Ya Talk It!,now this is a song from "Cockroach" but it isnt just a
re-recording,it's a complete remake, this is hardly recognizable as the track from "Cockroach",they have
kept the lyrics but the music has really changed,it has gone from mid-tempo rocker to full on riff assault
with excellent drumming from Steve West,a great way to finnish another D2 masterpiece.
