Howie came to Sherwood as a gift from Judy Gray (Tri-Lite Cockers). Judy had just moved to Washington and had to cut back her numbers of dogs. Being a Ch. Jo-Bea's Diamond Trader grandson, and black to boot, his addition was a must. Howie finished quickly but didn't start his specials career for another 2 years, a career that started out somewhat inauspiciously.

His first time out as a special saw "How Man" stop dead in the ring. This was not something he was intent on doing. Judges asked, "what wrong, he's beautiful, get him to show". That didn't happen until 3 weeks later, where he won his first variety over top competition. Howie showed well the year of 2000, finishing as the #10 Black in the breed standings.
