What is DragonBall Z?
Well...DragonBall Z is an animated show creted by Akira Toriyama. It is categorized as Japanimation (Japanese Animation). The American version of the show is very edited and does not allow the show to reach it's peak of popularity. It is aired on Cartoon Network at 5:00 p.m., during the Toonami block and at 12:30 a.m. EST Standard Time. Dragonball Z is dubbed and edited by FUNimation.
The Show:
DragonBall Z is based around the adventures of a Saiyan named Goku. Saiyans were a primitive species who lived to fight and thought of nothing else but fighting. Goku is one of the last surviving members of his race because his home planet was destroyed by an evil villian named Frieza (son of King Cold). Frieza is a notorious planet broker who destroys all lifeforms on planets and sells them to the highest bidder. He had been using the Saiyans for the well-being of his own business when he realized that the Saiyans were getting too powerful. In turn, he destroys their home planet and all of its inhabitants.
Goku hangs out with a group of friends known as Z Warriors. They include: Tien, Yamcha, Chiaotzu, Piccolo, and Krillin. His son, Gohan, who is half-Saiyan, also fights with them and he was trained by the Namek fighter Piccolo.
The series picks up a few years later after the original Dragonball series. Goku has gotten married and has "settled down". He now has a son named Gohan who is 4 years old at the beginning of the series.
Gohan has a power level that varies from 1 to 1,370 at the beginning of the series. His power level varies with his emotions. Just to give you an idea of how powerful he is, the power level of the average human is about 8. Goku's power level (power is also called "ki") is 416 at the beginning of the series.
Goku is forced to team up with his arch-rival in the previous series, (Dragonball) Piccolo, to fight off the evil Saiyan named Radditz (who is also Goku's brother). This is where Piccolo starts to turn good. Goku ends up being the most powerful Saiyan, but at this time his brother's power level is at 1,200, almost 3x his own. *Refer to the Summaries section for the result of that fight and all others in the American Dragonball Z series*
Goku was sent to planet Earth as a baby to prepare Earth (destroy it's lifeforms) to be sold to planet brokers. Like all other Saiyans, Goku had the natural urge to fight, so he was a wild and raving youngster. He first appeared in Dragonball while he was fishing for food. At this time, he was living on his own. After he had caught a fish he was heading back to camp when he was struck by Bulma*refer to Bios*. She felt sorry for him and decided to take him in because he was unconsious. He was adopted by an old man named Gohan*Goku's son was named after him*.
Goku was a wild kid and was almost uncontrollable. But, he sustained a serious blow to the head at a very young age and he almost didn't survive it. The accident caused Goku to lose memory of his mission and from that day forth he was the purest of heart on the entire planet.
Grandpa Gohan realized a strange trait that Goku had. He had a tail! Gohan just thought that this was some sort of deformity and thought no more about it. But, what Gohan didn't know is that his tail allows him to transform into a giant monkey-like creature called an Oozaru. When Goku transformed he had no memory of what had happened after he turned back to normal. Grandpa Gohan figured out that the tail was causing this and he had it surgically removed to where it would not grow back. Since then he had no trouble with full moons...until it grew back.
