securing beams/rafters to cob wall
Beams were secured to cob wall using a 2"x8" nailer plate.  These plates were spiked into the cob beneath it.  The nailer plates serve to anchor the beams into the cob as well as to distribute the load of the beam over a broader area (to avoid concentrated loading on the cob).  The beams were nailed to the nailer plates with the help of angle brackets.  The beams and nailer plates were then "porcupined" with nails and embedded into the cob wall.
Beam attached to nailer plate with angle bracket. Beam porcupined with nails being embedded in cob.
Kristina adding more cob to secure beam. Beams embedded in cob walls.
