insulating our roof
We want to use recycled material or materials that we have on hand (i.e. straw and clay).  For recycled material we considered old clothing and packing styrofoam.  Unfortunately our local recycling center does not have a recycling bin for styrofoam.  We are currently considering using old clothing.  We will pack it in water tight/condensation proof bags and lay them in between the ceiling and steel roofing.  We will be careful to leave an airspace between the insulation and roof to avoid condensation problems.  We want to try old clothing as we have not heard of anyone using this method.  We realize that one of main issues is that it could attract varmits for nesting.  Hopefully this won't happen but we will be monitoring it closely.  If this experiment does not work out this winter/summer, we will probably use straw/clay instead.  On Dec 19, before enclosing roofline with cob parapet, we installed old clothing for insulation.  We had access through the rafters on the east side of our studio.  After installing insulation, we closed off access hole with dirt-filled earthbags and then covered earthbags with cob.  We utilized earthbags as we wanted to use a thinner layer of cob so that we can break through access hole and check on how the insulation holds up.
Space between rafters and ceiling before roofing was installed. Our insulation will be placed in this space between the ceiling boards and the roofing.
The east section of roof was kept expose to allow access for insulation installation.
Old clothing was placed over the ceiling boards.
We also used old blankets.  It took about 4 garbage bag loads to insulate our entire roof.
We used dirt-filled bags to enclose access holes.
The east side is almost completely sealed.
