Replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator is very simple. All you need is a 5mm allen, 17mm and 19mm open end wrench.

First remove the air cleaner housing and ducts.  A 10mm socket and a philips screwdriver is all you need.

This is a quick and dirty page I threw together.  Am looking for a better web hosting site without limited space.

Once the aircleaner assembly off, you can see the wonderfully accessable Fuel Pressure Regulator.  On one side of it is the braided fuel line, under it is fuel rail and on the other side is the vacuum line.

Replace the Vacuum Hose. Get this BEFORE you remove the old regulator, use the new reg as a size guide, the hose is not a standard fuel line size.  If you have the Service Manual , Ignore the hose clamps the manual tells you to replace, the hose barely fits in the manifold, seems impossible to put a clamp on it too.

Wet the new O-ring (comes with the regulator) with gas before pressing it in.

As can be seen in the above, the part number for the 1990 3.6L regulator is Bosch 0 280 160 298.

I chiseled apart the old regulator, it consists of little more than a housing, spring and diaphram.

Why change the Fuel Pressure Regulator in your V8Q??

Well there are a few good reasons.  The best is that it is CHEAP INSURANCE.   A common scenario on the V8Q with a failed Fuel Pressure Regulator is that the regulator will leak down after shutoff, fuel rail pressure and volume is enough that it will fill a cylinder or two with gasoline.  The best you can hope for in this case is a stripped starter, worst case (which happens most often) is stripped teeth on the flywheel.

A faulty Fuel Pressure Regulator may cause different and distinct problems on a running V8Q.  The most common is a slight surging and rich idle.

If your car has an unknown maintenance history, or you know for sure the Fuel Pressure Regulator has not been changed in the last 5 years, DO IT NOW.  Anyone who can change a flat tire or spark plugs should be able to  R&R the FPR in about 10 minutes.
