While it
may be true that Cob started as a backyard breeder of unregistered Chinese
Shar-Pei in 1993 when she first bought "Cobi" whom Cob was named
after, Corazon upon realizing that she had been had by local CSP breeders making
her believe that the breed was rare and therefore, did not really have papers,
went to North American to look for her breeding foundation stocks. She
bought Cobi in 1992 after her faithful companion, Kikko, a Pekingese died.
While she was looking at Shar-Pei puppies from one kennel to another, she
learned from the breeders a whole lot of crap and she believed them and paid
lofty a sum for a "Hong Kong" import. Of course, the things that
she was told by the breeders of her dogs she also passed on to her puppy
buyers. For two years, she was backyard-breeding Chinese Shar-Pei.
She would go to the other breeders studying the breed till one day in 1994, she
came across an AKC imported Chinese Shar-Pei advertisement. Only then did
she realized that she had been fooled. The seller swapped the AKC bitch
for a male Shar-Pei pup from a litter that Coh had at the time. Reason
being that there were no available registered stud in the country. And so
she started showing and then bred her AKC import, AV with Cobi. By
mid-year of 1995, she came another ad this time for PCCI registered Shar-Pei
pups. She bought a male however much discontented with the way "Benyu"
looked, he wasn't even anything close to the ones that she has bred in the past.
Back in the
show ring with her dogs, she realized how the dog show scene has changed.
Learning from experience and from the more reputable crowd of breeders coupled
with availability of resources such as books and literature, Corazon decided of
importing a Chinese Shar-Pei stud instead of breeding AV with Benyu. She
set out to North America summer of 1994 and brought back "Hapitails Mi-Tu
Mugzy Malone" by fall. In the ring, Mugs was winning lots of group
placements including 1sts taking it away from the Shih Tzu. At this time,
she also had a rescued Basset Hound, Sly and an English Bulldog, Conan who were
also likewise very competitive in the ring. She bred and first registered
litter under the "Cob Kennel" affix December of 1995 and the rest is
history.
Long-gone
are her backyard-breeding days of ignorance and stupidity. Philippine
Champion Jai Feh Re of Cob, Jazz was unbeatable in the Non-Sporting Group Ring
during the time that she was between 3 to 6 months of age. She finished
her Championship of record with 3 majors barely 9 months old. A father and
daughter team, Jazz and Mugs would win major awards in 1996. And caught by
the bug, Cob imported its Chinese Shar-Pei foundation stocks. One after
the other, the Cob puppies won group at both rings during back to back shoes and
would be competing with each other for Best Baby Puppy In Show. Cob made
its mark from just an ignorant backyard breeder to the Home of Best Baby Puppy
In Show.
Corazon
gave away her unregistered dogs to family, friends and employees and totally
devoted her attention to a responsible breeding program. In 1997, she
established the Chinese Shar-Pei Enthusiasts, Inc. to properly promote the breed
and discourage backyard breeding of unregistered dogs altogether. The club
held its first National Specialty and All Breeds Dog Show November, 1997 with
AKC judges: Elaine Rigden and Constance Barton and again, made a mark in
the Philippine show dog scene as one of the top most organized and well-attended
show in the history of the Philippine Purebred Sport. The even had nice
reviews and was even featured in DOG NEWS magazine.
