When Sampson Mitchell, 57, of Youngstown, Ohio, went outside to investigate a noise in his garage one morning around 6 a.m., he was confronted by a man wielding a crowbar, according to police reports. Fearing for his life, Mitchell fired once from his 9 mm handgun, but his assailant kept coming.  Two additional shots sent the man, now severely wounded, fleeing. The intruder was found dead - still clutching the crowbar a short time later in a back yard two houses away. (The Vindicator, Youngstown, Ohio, 11/2/99)

If Mr. Mitchell would have had to taken the trigger lock off his 9 mm pistol, or would have had to load it after he found this criminal in his garage, would he have had time to protect himself and his family? Maybe and maybe not.

Mr. Sampson, having a handgun in this case, had the advantage over the criminal. This is why the framers of our constitution made sure that law abiding citizens have the right to keep and bear arms.

Handguns are used many more times for protection in a proper manner than they are used for crime or in accidents.
