| UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SAYS "Boys who own legal firearms have much lower rates of delenquency and drug use." One area of the U.S. D.O.J.'s study by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. (OJJDP), entitled "Urban Delinquency and Substance Abuse", addressed youth gun ownership. It found that, "74% of the illegal gun owners commit street crimes, 24% commit gun crimes, and 41% use drugs." It goes on to say, "Boys who own legal firearms, however, have much lower rates of delinquency and drug use and are even slightly less delinquint than nonowners of guns." Then the study suggests a reason for this, "The socialization into gun ownership is also vastly different for legal and illegal gun owners. Those who own legal guns have fathers who own guns for sport and hunting. On the other hand, those who own illegal guns have friends who own illegal guns and are far more likely to be gang members. For legal gun owners, socialization appears to take place in the family, for illegal gun owners, it appears to take place on the street." So the boys involved in less street crimes, no gun crimes and less drug use, are boys who own guns legally.
