My dad proudly served his country in the 7th Army South Germany 48th Combat Head- quarters 1014th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company as a Staff Sergeant. An outline of my dad's war follows: |
New York Harbor United Kingdom Northwest France - He was ready to land in LST's when they were ordered to wait at the last moment because of a German offensive during or just after the Battle of the Bulge. Kiskassel France Built a treadway floating bridge on the Rhine river Aschaffenburg Germany - Before my dad entered this town there was fierce fighting. As he was on the outskirts of town Allied plaines would straif and bomb from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Then at night the artillary would take over for twelve hours. The shells were fired from behind my dad towards Aschaffenburg traveling over him. Every once in a while one would go off prematurely and he could hear the shell fragments coming down through the trees. He insists this is why his hearing is so bad today. Bamberg Germany Munich Germany Stein Germany - My dad was here when the war in Europe ended and the following day when the coward Hitler com- mitted suicide.
