| The Craft family moved to Sullivan County Tennesse, and Michael Craft, Jr. and met and married Elizabeth Christian, daughter of Col. Gilbert Christian and his wife Margaret Anderson. Both Michael Craft, Sr. and Michael Craft, Jr. appear on the 1796 Sullivan County Tax List. By 1799, Michael Craft, Jr., along with others went to an area of Kentucky where they began homestead preparations. He built a cabin and planted crops before returning to Tennessee to move his family. Upon their arrival to the new homestead, the crops had been eaten by bears. In 1801, Michael Craft Jr. received land by a certificate of settlement for 400 acres of land on Illwill Creek in Cumberland County. His wife Elizabeth received a certificate for an additional 200 acres. They were identified as lying on the south side of the Cumberland river on the waters of Illwill. By 1833, the Craft's were paying taxes on 730 acres. Michael Craft Jr. and Elizabeth Christian deeded a tract of 4 acres of land to the Methodist Society in 1823 for the establishment of the Rose of Sharon Methodist Church and cemetery. The deed was dated 24 January, 1823, and the trustees of the Methodist Church were George Richardson, Reuben Bryson, James Guthery (Guthrie), George Guthery (Guthrie) and Benjamin Spear.The land was donated for the purpose of a camping ground and burying ground. Upon their deaths, he in 1846 and she in 1854, Michael and Elizabeth were buried in the cemetery they had donated land for. Many members of their family are buried here also. |
