III. Job Data Bank Access
– Using the Internet, World Wide Web (WWW), and Additional Info:
There
are many ways to access the job data banks whether or not you have a computer
with a modem.
A.
If you have a computer with
a modem:
1.
Free
diskettes are available to test for up to 50 hours free time from different
ISP’s such as America Online, Earthlink, etc.
Ask around for a copy.
2.
SAMS
provides a list of Internet job bank sites.
Ask the group facilitators for a current copy of the list.
B.
If you do not have a
computer:
1.
Every
Fulton County Library System branch has computer terminal access to an Internet
job bank that lists literally 100s of jobs, most of which are high tech in
nature but also include HR, marketing, sales, trainers, managers, and
documentation specialists. You do not
need to have a library card to use the system – anyone from any county can walk
in and use it.
2.
The
Peachtree Corners branch library (Norcross) has an on-site computer reference
system called “System 1.” This allows
the user to get a list of target companies by industry, size of company, area
of Atlatna, etc.
3.
Most
college/university libraries provide access to the Internet – World Wide Web
(www). Use the SAMS list of Internet sites.
Again, just walk in, ask the reference desk, and away you go!
4.
Contact
your nearest public and school libraries to determine what computer services
are provided. Almost all of them
provide access to the Internet and the World Wide Web (www). It’s there, it’s free, and your taxes helped
pay for it. Use it!
Have your resume reviewed
for free: A Seekers alumnus, Scott Evans, is an HR
specialist and will review your resume for free and offer suggestions on
how it may be improved. If you would
like to contact him:
1.
Name: Scott Evans
Home phone: 770-752-1988
Or email: [email protected]
2.
He
will review and send your resume back to you with comments/notations and
suggestions on ways you may want to improve it.
Did you respond to a blind
ad with a P.O. box? Find out to whom the box
belongs! Call the U.S. Post Office at
1-800-275-8777 and ask for the phone number of the zip code Post Office. Now call that post office and ask who
owns the P.O. box number. By law they
must tell you.
Employment search
firms: For a directory of the
Georgia Association of Personnel Services, listing more than 150 employment
firm members by specialty, send $6.95 and a SASE to GAPS, P.O. Box 500386,
Atlanta, GA 31150 – or call
770-952-3178 for information – or ask around SAMS.
