| Welcome to Coats Council #417 | ||||||||
| The Junior Order of United American Mechanics is the oldest fraternal order created in the US still around. It was founded in 1853, at Philadelphia, Penn. We are a nonsectarian, nonprofit, patriotic fraternal benefit society. We are also known as the Jr. Order, Jr. OUAM, and United American Mechanics. Since its birth, the Junior Order has grown in influence and community prestige. Men and women have kept the spirit of brotherhood alive by unselfish assistance to each other and to the communities in which they live. The term Junior Order has historical significance only. For a brief time in its early history, the organization was a youth branch of the original United American Mechanics founded in 1845. JrOUAM membership is not confined to craftsmen. The term Mechanics is used broadly to mean builders of character, integrity and citizenship. The Junior Order is composed of American citizens of good moral character who believe in a Supreme Being as the Creator and Preserver of the Universe. The Jr. Order is opposed to the union of church and state. For we believe that every citizen possess the liberty of worshiping God according to the dictates of his own conscience. The JrOUAM is in favor of upholding the American Public School System. We hold that our schools should be conducted in the English language, to the end that future generations may be able to take their place as English speaking citizens of an English speaking country. We encourage the reading of the Holy Bible in the schools not to teach sectarianism, but moral excellence. The Junior Order does NOT support a Communist or a member of any other subversive organization advocating the overthrow of our Government by force and violence. The Junior Order of United American Mechanics supports the American Children's Home in Lexington, NC. Some of our state councils also support the Lupus Foundation and Cerebral Palsy. Some of our state and local Jr. OUAM councils award scholarships to outstanding high school students in their area. Our Jr. Order lodges stay active by sponsoring dinners, fish fry's, barbecues and participating in parades and festivals. There is an annual Bowling Tournament and Golf Outing and The Jr. American newspaper keeps us informed of happenings in our local councils of the Junior Order. The Junior Order also has insurance benefits. |
