Photographs by Terry Jelcick (with the exception of this one)
OK, just so you don't get confused, that's me, Spec. 4 Terry Jelcick, on the left.
The M60 Machine Gun has been the US Army's general purpose machine gun since 1950.
In a typical machine gun pose, it is usually a young, eager, unsuspecting volunteer who's watched one too many Rambo flicks who chooses this weapon. Predictably, it is only a matter of time, about half way up the hill, before he begins looking around to see who will help him carry it. The ammo ain't light either.
It seems like I've taken a lot of pictures from within the ranks of different units I've been assigned to over the past thirty years, from the left coast to the right coast and points in between. A short time in the Utah snow, hitting the ground with cactus and rocks just below the snowy cover, frozen water in your canteen and frozen socks in the morning. Ahhh, the joys of Army life.
After a short, and very enjoyable, stint with the 1/149th Armor Divsion as an Intelligence Analyst (96B), I transfered to the Coast Guard and an ocean view office at Group Monterey, overlooking the Monterey Bay in California.
