Something Corporate – Leaving Through the Window

With the reemergence of rock music, Something Corporate has a chance on the popular music level. The recently signed Something Corporate released their full length debut album on Drive-Thru/MCA Records early this Fall. The difference between this band and every other rock band is their piano-playing singer. Andrew McMahon teamed up bassist Clutch (yes, only Clutch, due to his entrance into the witness protection program) and drummer Brian Ireland for a one song, battle of bands competition at their high school in Orange County, California. Shockingly, they won the competition. With their newfound success, McMahon, Ireland, and Clutch decided to call it quits. However, if not for the meeting of McMahon and guitarist Josh Partington at a high school party Something Corporate would have never have come to be. Partington inspired McMahon to start actively playing in a band again. McMahon looked no further then his high school battle buddies, Ireland and Clutch, to round out the rhythm section. With the addition of second guitarist William Tell, the lineup was completed. While the rest of the band derives their inspirations from straight rock with minor punk influences, while McMahon stems his influence from the infamous Elton John. The closest comparison to Something Corporate would be New Found Glory meets Ben Folds Five over a light, melodic pop brunch. From their gritty guitars to their soft piano interludes, this band has “something” to offer everyone. But do not think that this band is purely piano or just distorted guitars all the time. The members of Something Corporate know when their instrument is needed to complete a song. They blend their mix perfectly. McMahon’s lyrics come directly from life. In “If yoU C Jordan”, McMahon tells the story about a guy from his old high school that wants to fight him. Something Corporate started grabbing the attention of record executives while opening for the likes of Sugar Ray and Better Than Ezra. Ironically, this piano playing rock band signed to a predominantly punk rock label. However, the band feels that this will broaden their fan base and widen the places and tours they will play.
