Amber was awoken by a sharp pain in her abdomen, opening her eyes she placed her hand on her stomach and bit her lip. 'Kicking mood today' she thought looking down at her round stomach. She moved her hand away from her stomach and grasped the pillow as the pain came again. 'Sleep, it can cure anything' she thought, glancing at the clock and closing her eyes again.
"Yo J, you up for a game of basketball today?" Nick asked as he called AJ's house from his spot in Whit's bed.
"Yea, where?" AJ answered as he stood beside Lauren, both looking in the refrigerator.
"Brent's house, it's down the street from the girl's house, just come over here and we'll walk down there.." Nick explained.
"What time?" AJ asked.
"Noon, you coming?" Nick said.
"Yea, see you in about an hour" AJ said back as he hung up his phone and both himself and Lauren started to get ready.
Brian was laying awake in his bed, he had Amber's shirt partially pulled up, one ear was on her stomach, listening intently to her heartbeat while the other traced small circles. He watched her as she slept, soon they'd have everything they'd wanted, they were going to have a little girl, they'd been notified three weeks earlier and they'd narrowed it down to two names. He was startled by the ringing phone, "Hello?" he asked, picking it up with the hand that had been tracing circles. Nick who was on the other line gave Brian the run down of the days plans and Brian agreed.
A little after noon Brian arrived, walking behind Amber who seemed to waddle instead of actually walk. She slowly sat down on the couch as all of the other girls appeared in the room. The guys, which were all five of them made little conversation before asking Whit where the basketball was.
"In the garage...and..." she began as Nick made a quick dash for the garage, they were already late anyways, "watch out for that box it's behind.." she finished as a loud crash was heard, implying something had fell.
AJ and Brian made their way over to the door that led out to the garage, they both started to laugh as the examined the pile of clothes, books, everyday pratical junk that Nick was buried under. "Damn, that hurt" Nick laughed himself as he got up, holding the basketball and making his way back into the house.
"Did you pick all that stuff up?" Lauren asked.
"No, I'll do it when I get back, we were supposed to be there five minutes ago and we still gotta walk down the street.." Nick began as they made their way towards the door. "When I get back" he stated as Lauren rolled her eyes. Once the guys had left the girls turned their attention to Amber.
"How ya doing?" Whit asked.
"Normal, but I'm having some pain today, she wants kick the hell out of me" Amber commented as she sighed and yawned.
"Tired?" Ashley asked.
"I always am" Amber laughed as she closed her eyes.
"Well you can sleep in my bedroom if you want.." Whit began, Amber's room no longer existed since she'd moved in with Brian, the girls had turned it into a recreation room, adding a pool table, but mostly it was a place to pile stuff they didn't use anymore.
"Ewww, I dunno whats been in your bed.." Amber laughed as she stood up, making her way towards the stairs, she'd take up the offer.
It was five o'clock, the guys still weren't back, but it got that way when they got together. They could play basketball for hours on end, although Whit guessed they were sitting around talking, swimming or playing pool by now. Amber's eyes suddenly opened as she winced in pain and grabbed at the sheets, shutting her eyes quickly, hoping to ease the pain she was feeling. Her eyes widened as she got up from the bed, looking back at the place where she'd been laying, a small spot of blood stained the sheets. "Somebody come up here" she yelled, trying to stay calm as she made her way towards the bathroom.
Whit sighed lifting herself from the couch as she made her way upstairs, just as she entered the doorway she saw Amber standing in the bathroom, she saw Amber grab at her stomach quickly before she began to fall. Whitney quickly ran over to the bathroom, catching Amber before her whole body hit the floor. "Oh shit, somebody come here" Whit frantically yelled as she sat in the bathroom floor, Amber's head in her lap, her panic was only increased when she saw Amber's blood covered hands.
"What?" Lauren and Ashley asked, coming into view.
"Oh my god, whats happening?" Ashley repeated as she took a seat beside Amber on the floor, trying her best to help in any possible way.
"I don't know, Lauren call Brent's fast...get Brian" Whit ordered as she threw the phone at Lauren. Lauren quickly dialed the number, no answer. "Damnit, Lauren get down there, run, its quicker than driving, please just get Brian....somebody call the ambulance..." Whit began, Lauren quickly nodded as her eyes watered, she didn't waste any time though, soon she was running the small distance to Brent's house.
"Brian, oh my god, Brian..." she said, grabbing Brian's arm and pulling him from the conversation he was currently in.
"What?" Brian asked, seeing her face that showed pure horror.
"Amber..blood..Amber...needs help...blood" Lauren choked out.
Brian glanced down at Lauren's hands which had a little blood on them, a small stain of blood showed on the edge of her shirt. "Oh my god what happened, whats wrong with her?" Brian asked as he took off running towards the girl's house, fearing the worst. Everyone else soon followed. "Baby, what's wrong, what's happening?" he asked as he entered the upstairs bathroom where the other girl's were trying to do whatever they could. Whit was getting towels and on the phone with the 911 operator, so Brian had Amber's head in his lap, rocking her back and forth as she cried. He started to cry himself, "Damnit, when is the ambulance coming?" he yelled as Whit paced the room.
"They just sent it out, the operator is trying to tell me what to do now" Ashley explained, she was now on the phone, telling Whitney, Brooke and Sarah what to do.
"Just sent one out, damnit, what kind of fucked up town do we live in?" Whit yelled herself.
"Forget it, I'll take her to the hospitial myself, somebody who drives fast take me" Brian stated, standing up and picking Amber up with him. She winced in pain as she cried into his shoulder.
Three minutes later they were on the interstate. "Damnit people, get the fuck out the way" Whitney yelled out of her open window as she floored the Suburan, dodging any objects that came in her way.
Two hours later they all sat in the waitingroom. The doctor came out, nobody could read what his look meant, "Are you all with Mrs. Littrell?" he asked.
"Yes" Brian quickly answered. "I'm her husband" he added.
"I'm sorry Mr. Littrell.." he began.
Brian began to shake, his eyes filled with tears, who was the doctor talking about, Amber or the baby? "Her or the baby?" he asked, trying to keep a steady voice.
"The baby" the doctor answered.
Relief washed over everyone, loosing the baby was bad, but not as bad as losing Amber. Brian was crying, everything had been perfect, he was going to be a daddy, one of the things he'd wished for. And in the blink of an eye it'd been taken, as if it was never his in the first place. "We had names, everything..." he began.
"I'm sorry for your loss, if you'd like to see your wife, you can, she's not in the best state, but..she may be in a time of need" the doctor stated.
Brian looked up with pleading eyes as he swallowed and nodded, standing up with shaky legs as he made his way down the hall and into her room. "I'm sorry Brian" Amber whispered as he came up to her bedside, holding her hand.
"It's not your fault baby, it's not your fault" he whispered back, rubbing her hand with his index finger.
"I mean Brian, we had everything, it was all going so well....we were going to have children, something we made....we were ready, why did this have to happen?" Amber cried as she bit her lip.
"I don't know baby, I don't know, but we'll make it work, Ok, I promise you that, we'll make it work" he repeated as he gave her a weak smile, himself crying.
